Tooth Extraction
Here are key things to keep in mind for a healthy recovery after a tooth extraction:
Bite on Gauze: Apply firm pressure by biting on the gauze provided to help stop bleeding and form a blood clot. Keep it in place for about 30-45 minutes.
Avoid Rinsing and Spitting: Don’t rinse, spit, or use a straw for the first 24 hours, as these actions can dislodge the clot and delay healing.
Manage Pain and Swelling: Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medications as directed. Use an ice pack on the outside of your cheek for 15 minutes at a time to reduce swelling.
Rest and Relax: Limit physical activity for the first 24-48 hours to avoid dislodging the clot or increasing bleeding.
Eat Soft Foods: Stick to soft foods like yogurt, applesauce, and mashed potatoes for the first few days. Avoid hard, crunchy, or hot foods that can irritate the extraction site.
Maintain Oral Hygiene: Continue brushing your teeth but avoid the extraction site. After 24 hours, you can gently rinse with warm salt water to keep the area clean.
Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol for at least 72 hours, as these can interfere with healing and increase the risk of complications.
Watch for Complications: Be alert for signs of infection or dry socket, such as severe pain, persistent bleeding, or swelling. Contact your dentist if you notice any of these symptoms.
Follow Up with Your Dentist: Attend any scheduled follow-up appointments to ensure the extraction site is healing properly.
Adhering to these guidelines will promote a smooth and healthy recovery after a tooth extraction.
